Promoting Environmental Education through Aquaponics
Global agriculture is facing increasing challenges due to climate change, population growth, and the depletion of natural resources. Rising temperatures, water scarcity, soil degradation, and the growing demand for food are putting conventional farming systems under significant pressure. At the same time, agriculture remains one of the largest consumers of freshwater and relies heavily on chemical fertilizers, raising concerns about its long-term sustainability.
These challenges have encouraged the development of innovative farming methods such as aquaponics. Aquaponics is a sustainable food production system that combines aquaculture (raising fish) with hydroponics (growing plants without soil) in a single, closed-loop ecosystem. Fish produce nutrient-rich waste, which is converted by beneficial bacteria into nutrients that plants can absorb. In return, the plants naturally filter and purify the water, which is then recirculated back to the fish tanks.
This symbiotic relationship allows both fish and plants to thrive while using up to 90% less water than conventional farming, reducing waste and eliminating the need for most chemical fertilizers. As a result, aquaponics is increasingly recognized as a promising solution for producing food in a more sustainable and resource-efficient way.

Our project
Fish & Seeds was developed by five first-year students at EDHEC Business School to introduce aquaponics to primary school children in Roubaix. Through a series of interactive workshops, the project encouraged children to explore sustainable food production and innovative agricultural techniques in a fun and practical way.
The main objective was to inspire environmental awareness from an early age. As the decision-makers of tomorrow, children play a key role in building a more sustainable future. By introducing them to aquaponics, the project sought to foster curiosity, environmental responsibility, and a lasting interest in sustainable development.

To maximize the impact of the project, we established partnerships with several primary schools in Roubaix and worked closely with teachers to organize educational workshops on aquaponics and sustainable agriculture.
These workshops were designed to encourage children's curiosity and environmental awareness through hands-on activities.
We also promoted the initiative through local media, with articles published in regional newspapers such as La Voix du Nord and Nord Littoral. This media coverage helped raise public awareness of the project and highlighted the importance of environmental education for younger generations.
In addition, we participated in two community tree-planting events organized by a local eco-village. These activities allowed us to engage with local residents, strengthen our commitment to environmental action, and exchange ideas with people involved in sustainability initiatives.
